Mary Dore - She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry

I'm looking forward to opening Mary Dore's new film (She's Beautiful When She's Angry) at the Rose this Friday, 2/6, because I loved her film, The Good Fight. Years before the movie came out, one of my houseboat neighbors in Seattle was Elias "Dutch" Schultz, a former member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Dutch led and extraordinary life.

Werner Herzog: A Guide for the Perplexed, 8/28/14

He was born and raised in Harlem, New York, the son of Austrian immigrant Jews. During the Depression he was drawn to left-wing causes, and served in the Lincoln Brigade in Spain.  He worked as a longshoreman until 1973.  Jews in longshore work were rare, and Dutch had to deal with anti-Semitism, open and veiled.  All through his working life, Dutch's main passion was wood sculpture. But one of my fondest memories of Dutch is an audible one.  Living on the houseboat dock, I came to identify people by the sound of their footsteps on planks of the dock.  Dutch's footsteps were unmistakeable because he was the only resident of the dock who wore wooden clogs.  He died in 2006, just three days after his 96th birthday.

See you at the Rose, and the Starlight Room.
