If you're feeling uncertain about returning to the Rose due to COVID, please know that attendance for every show, for every movie is remarkably sparse. Most shows see attendance of fewer than six people, and fifteen would constitute a crowd these days. Except for our first two shows in late July, it has been like this since our re-opening. The safety of our staff and patrons is our primary concern. We have some great movies playing, with more on the horizon - Coming Soon - and the Starlight Room will be re-opening soon. And after numerous requests, we will be making all three venues available for private showings.
If you like mysteries, THE LOST LEONARDO is a doozy of a tale. The globe-trotting narrative begins when an art buyer purchases a painting from a New Orleans art dealer. Working with a renown art historian and restorer, they determine that they have a Leonardo da Vinci on their hands. And so the movie moves from the art game to the money game. "Among other things, this picture demonstrates that a conventionally structured documentary can pack the fascination and wallop of an expertly executed fictional thriller."
Oscar Isaac is one of those great, versatile actors - like Tilda Swinton and Viola Davis - that I will never tire of watching. They bring a depth, intensity and believability to every character they portray. Isaac brought it to his characters in Joel and Ethan Coen's INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS and in A MOST VIOLENT YEAR. And he stars in the eagerly anticipated DUNE. In THE CARD COUNTER - on screen tomorrow - Isaac plays William Tell, a former prison interrogator and now a professional gambler who hops from casino to casino, playing just skillfully enough to beat the house. He manages to keep the demons from his past at bay, but director Paul Schrader (TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL) means to draw those demons back out into the open. "A new Paul Schrader movie is always an event and this spellbinding meditation on sin and salvation...is one of his best." -ABC News
