Rocky’s Review
Aftersun

We live in a digital world, but AFTERSUN - opening Friday in the Rosebud - was shot in lush 35mm. The movie is the most evocative look at an adolescent gaze coming to terms with the adult world since MOONLIGHT (2016).

The layered drama finds 12-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) on vacation at a Turkish resort with her father Callum (Paul Mescal) in the 1990s, while the adult Sophie recalls their time together. The movie exists almost exclusively within Sophie's delicate memories as she sifts through the recollections of her father.

"There was a mystery to the process of discovering what [the story] was," said Wells. Wells knows that people emerge from AFTERSUN with questions. She has all the answers, even if she won't reveal them. "Withholding is kind of the point of the film in a lot of ways." "Every moment, every snippet of dialogue, down to the tiniest detail...feels like a vibrant slice of real life." -Chicago Sun-Times

Composer Carter Burwell is known as the "third Coen brother" because of his work for Joel and Ethan Coen, going back to their first film, BLOOD SIMPLE from 1984. He recorded the score for THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN at Abbey Road - the Beatles' old studio. A characteristic Burwell score is spare and haunting, and he usually urges directors to use as little music as possible, because movies, like life, are more interesting "when you don't now what's going on, and you're uncomfortable about it." Every show of BANSHEES is selling out well in advance of show time. It will be holding over in the Starlight for a second week.

The one-night (11/29), 20th anniversary showing of CONCERT FOR GEORGE is almost sold out. It's a great concert film. "The sweet, solemn music of George Harrison...has rarely sounded more majestic." - The New York Times

Our final presentation of THE SEAGULL from the National Theatre of London is this Sunday at 11:30. "Brave, compelling and powerful." -Guardian

Tomorrow is Free Popcorn Wednesday for any member enjoying a movie in the Rose, Starlight or streaming from our online Film Library.
