Rocky’s Review
Analog Love

Analog Love. A one-hundred dollar donation came through the transom last week from some generous Rose fans. Equal to this thoughtful gift - for me - was the note accompanying it. It was composed on a Royal Futuro 800 typewriter. The donors were inspired to purchase the typewriter after seeing CALIFORNIA TYPEWRITER at the Rose in 2018. It's a wonderful documentary - a small gem, really - that profiles a struggling-to-stay-in-business typewriter repair and sales shop in Berkeley, California. You can rent the movie on Amazon. "Whimsically profound." -The Boston Globe

Beginning today - Wednesday, 5/27 - six new movies are being added this week to our virtual library of films. Enjoy.

CRESCENDO is a riveting drama about a world famous conductor who attempts to create an Israeli-Palestinian youth orchestra. It takes all of his skill and resources to overcome the discord and inspire these young people to play in harmony, building towards understanding, humanity and peace.

THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF is a stranger-than-fiction documentary. This is the elevator pitch that will either grab you, or not; desperate for answers about the theft of her two paintings, a Czech artist seeks out and befriends the career criminal who stole them. If that hooks you, then be sure to watch the conversation following the film between director Benjamin Ree and Executive Producer Morgan Neville (THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM). "It's a knockout." -Detroit News. "A documentary that looks at every day humanity as a work of art." -RogerEbert.com

Director Cédric Klapisch takes the traditional meet-cute set up and flips it on its head in the slow-burn Parisian romance SOMEONE, SOMEHWERE streaming Friday. 100% on Rotten Tomatoess. "A enchanting French romantic drama about synchronicity." -Spirituality & Practice

I'm very pleased to be able to present THE GREY FOX (1982) streaming this Friday. Great actor and stuntman Richard Farnsworth was nominated for a Golden Globe Award as best actor for his performance as legendary stagecoach robber Bill Miner. Farnsworth also starred in THE STRAIGHT STORY with Sissy Spacek which played at the Rose in 1999. "One of the best films of the 1980s." -Film Threat. Great reviews

After a successful run at the Rose in 2017, we're bringing back some cool cats this Friday. KEDI, the delightful story about the cats of Istanbul returns. Filmed at whisker-height!

MAGNOLIA PICTURES: A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE DOCS continues Friday with BLACKFISH. The Q&A with director Gabriela Cowperthwaite will be Wednesday, June 3rd at 5:00 PM (PST). You may submit questions in advance at submityourquestions@magpictures.com. Ten percent of ticket sales will go to the director's charity of choice: GiveDirectly's COVID relief fund.

The Port Townsend Film Festival joins the streaming community - May 28th - June 7th - with their annual WOMEN & FILM FESTIVAL. And it's free of charge! The virtual festival presents 6 features and 4 short films, all available throughout the 10-day period. You can check out the entire program at www.ptfilmfest.com.
