Rocky’s Review
Julia, Gucci & The Power of the Dog

Twenty-eight years ago Jane Campion received an Academy Award nomination for her direction of THE PIANO. While it's still early in this year's Oscar race, it's a strong bet that she will be nominated again for her direction of THE POWER OF THE DOG, now playing in the Rosebud Cinema for one week only. A second nomination for her would also make history, as no woman has ever been nominated in the category twice. And only two women in 93 years have ever won the award; Kathryn Bigelow for THE HURT LOCKER, and Chloé Zhao for NOMADLAND.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as a domineering but charismatic rancher who wages a war of intimidation on his brother's (Jesse Plemons) new wife (Kirsten Dunst), until long-hidden secrets come to light. Adapted from the novel by Thomas Savage, this poetic western "is a beautifully composed work by a filmmaker at the height of her powers. It deserves our attention." -San Francisco Chronicle

Another strong female contender for an Oscar is Lady Gaga, for her lead performance in HOUSE OF GUCCI, now playing in the Rose. Inspired by the shocking true story of the family empire behind the fashion house, Ridley Scott directs an all-star cast in this melodrama of love, betrayal, decadence, revenge, and, ultimately, murder. The cast also includes Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino. "House of Gucci is no masterpiece, but it's often crazy good fun." -Seattle Times

Returning to the Starlight Room this week is JULIA, the adoring and entertaining profile cookbook author and television star Julia Child, directed by Julie Cohen and Betsy West (RBG). It's the empowering story of a woman who found her purpose - and her fame - at 50, and took America along on the whole delicious journey. "This will hit the spot for viewers and possibly awards-bestowing bodies who hunger for stories of audacious, norm-shattering women." -Hollywood Reporter
