Someone should make a five minute compilation film of movie scenes that all take place on New Year's Eve. I would recommend including two scenes: The final scene between Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine in Billy Wilder's wonderful romantic comedy THE APARTMENT (1960). If you've never seen it, watch it, right away. The final line of the movie will make you smile. The other scene I would recommend is the sizzling duet of "Makin' Whoopee" between Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Bridges in THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS. It's stunning. Watch it. Rewind. Watch again.
What a great year 2018 was for documentaries - RBG, THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS, WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR, FREE SOLO, and numerous others. Nonfiction film is enjoying a great renaissance.
Fiction, however, currently holds forth at the Rose and Starlight Room. All three movies - MARY POPPINS RETURNS, THE FAVOURITE and VICE will be here for at least another week. Tickets are still available for WONDER BOYS, our Late Night @ The Starlight show this Saturday. It's a wonderful comedy from director Curtis Hanson, featuring a great cast - Michael Douglas, Frances McDormand, Toby Mcguire, Katie Holmes, Robert Downey Jr., Rip Torn and Jane Adams. And only ten tickets remain for GILDA, our Classics @ The Starlight show next Wednesday (1/9).
