It's definitely a busman's holiday, but a pretty cool one. The Telluride Film Festival in the mountains of southwest Colorado - where I head every Labor Day weekend in search of great films for you - is as close to movie heaven as one could hope to find. The altitude - nearly 9,000 ft - certainly helps in the heavenly regard. Be sure to check out the Rose Instagram feed (@rosetheatreporttownsend) this week for festival photos. And then there's that other festival called Sundance, started by a fellow named Robert Redford. I've never been there, but this Friday, September 2nd we're opening SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU, one of the hits of the most recent Sundance Film Festival, and a movie that won me over in the first five minutes. It's a fictional account of the first date between Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) and Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter). It's a tender, intimate drama that resonates well beyond a first-date kiss.
And I'm so excited to be opening the Cannes Film Festival hit HELL OR HIGH WATER this Wednesday August 31st. Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster - three powerhouse actors - in a modern-day western, spells what the late, great Roger Ebert would likely hail with two thumbs up. No only are the critic reviews glowing, but The Huffington Post, Forbes and Fox TV have called it the best movie of the year thus far.
To make way for the Wednesday opening of HELL OR HIGH WATER, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE plays only through Tuesday, August 30th.FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS will be holding over in the Starlight Room throughThursday, September 8th. DON'T THINK TWICE and BAD MOMS play through this Thursday, September 1st. SULLY, starring Tom Hanks and Laura Linney opens the following day, Friday, September 9th.
Watch for exciting news this Thursday, September 1st. Another great local business is joining our roster of business partners where Rose Theatre members receive wonderful discounts.
See you at the Rose, and the Starlight Room
