Rocky’s Review
Sam Shepard

I will miss Sam Shepard. The gifted and prolific playwright, actor, author, screenwriter and director, whose body of work spanned half a century, passed away last summer. He makes a cameo appearance - one of his last on film - in CALIFORNIA TYPEWRITER, the wonderfully entertaining documentary playing this Sunday as part of our Community Arts Film Series. The film is sold out, but I'll hopefully be bringing it back soon for a week-long engagement.

Diane Kruger, the German-born actress has appeared in 39 films, but IN THE FADE is the first German film she's appeared in. And what an incredible performance it is. The film is an edge-of-your-seat thriller with a fierce, incendiary, award-winning star-turn from Kruger. She won Best Actress honors at the most recent Cannes Film Festival, and the film took home the Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film. IN THE FADE plays for one week in the Starlight, beginning this Friday.

"And the winner is..." If you're yet to be satiated with Oscar nominees, the next three weeks at the Rose and Starlight Room should do the trick. This Friday we continue our tradition of presenting the Oscar nominated short films - Animation and Live Action - and next Friday, February 16th we'll have the short Documentary Oscar nominees on screen. And from February 23rd to March 1st, 11 Oscar nominees will light up our screens. Here's the line-up: (2/23) LADY BIRD, (2/24) THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and GET OUT, (2/25) ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ and DUNKIRK, (2/26) FACES PLACES and ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD, (2/27) GET OUT and THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, (2/28) COCO and MOLLY'S GAME, (3/1) LOVING VINCENT and WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES. Show times for all of them will posted on 2/19.

Only 5 tickets remaining for FERRIS BEULLER'S DAY OFF, our Late Night @ the Starlight show this Saturday. And the live simulcast of L'ELISIR D'AMOREfrom the Metropolitan Opera begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. And from Marvel Comics Universe comes BLACK PANTHER, one of the most hotly anticipated films of the new year. Our sneak preview is next Thursday at 7:00. It's currently scoring 99% on Rotten Tomatoes.
