Rocky’s Review
To The Ends of the Earth

TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH is a brilliant mix of black comedy, travelogue, drama and an adventure-imbued mockery of show business. It's an insightful, contemplative story about a young woman's journey from displacement to self-discovery. The film was commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the central Asian republic of Uzbekistan. Yoko (Atsuko Maeda) A Japanese TV journalist, travels to Uzbekistan on assignment, and gradually spirals into an emotional crisis after a series of touch-and-go misunderstandings that remind her that she's a single woman abroad, working a job that requires her enthusiasm, but doesn't really value her input. "I'm not sure exactly what this intriguing film adds up to, but it is strangely, unexpectedly involving and touching." -Guardian

When a fundamentalist Baptist minister decides at age 46 to come out as a transgender woman named Markie, it ends her 20-year marriage, estranges her three children, and see's her dismissed from her beloved church and exiled to the margins of her community. Markie's aim is simple: to be a good person and lead a devout life. Her struggles reveal the depths of our country's fixation on identity - political, spiritual and personal - and an acute fear of those who don't fit neatly within their communities. "Moving, intimate...a haunting meditation on the meaning of identity." -Los Angeles Times
