Ruth (a deliciously mischievous Charlotte Rampling) is sporting a heavy gin habit and a newly fractured leg. Her unruly grandson, Sam (played by newcomer George Ferrier) has been kicked out of boarding school after the death of his mother. The two light up the screen together as Ruth's fiery personality slowly wins him over, teaching the apathetic and cynical Sam just how much there is left to live for.
